Subject: The death of politics
Considering the age of posts on this site one might presume that politics has ended.

I can imagine an 'end of history' like Dr. Fukyama, but I cannot imagine and end of politics. History is neutral and therefore subject to end, but politics is evil and therefore eternal.

Perhaps it is merely that politics has become uninspired. Condemning fundamentalism is passe and bickering about the war is obvious. Perhaps it is time for the news media to create a new topic of conversation, but it is nearly high summer and I fear that we are doomed to tedium through early September.

In the interest of provoking comment I will suggest a list of the good, the bad, and the ugly. You are welcome to take issue with this list.

Good

War--but only when fought at the right time and for the right reason

Bad

Love--whenever it threatens preconceived notions, like violating the alleged sanctity of marriage. (What is the sanctity of marriage anyway and does a substantial minority even experience it?)

Ugly

Republicans

I must dissagree with you on almost all points.
Plitics are not bad, they are an essential part of our lives, they create the very grounds on witch the entire civilisation stand, politics are ``evil`` only certain kinds of it can be really detrimental to the society at large as many dictatorial goverments has proven.
Lonh ago i thought that politics is simply ideas on how to spend the tax money but that is only the case i a utopical society, politics is the dualism of fractional ideas battling it out for supremacy and cooperation above fractional/national borders towards achieving common goals, like world wide higher standard of living, eliminating poverty, creating opportunities for people to be happy and not maiking it possible for them to achieve their goals.

When politics come down to populistic ideas that take a hold of the general populus like nationalism or mixing religion with politics it can get really nasty.

War never comes at a right time or is fotr the right reason, there are only circumstances an decisions that make war in many cases inevitable, I am not a pacifist but war is never a good means of solving a problem, it is only brutally effective in the shorter end but never in the longer perspective.

Love is one of the greater experiences that a person can have, regardless of if it is in marriage, same gender or the regular straight relationships. Precocieved notions is one of the things that i try to exterminate from my mind whenever i catch myself with one. I do not believe in the sanctitiy of marriage, the notion of that having sex is right only after having gone through a religious or any other kind of ritual is laughable and it irritates the heck out of me whenever i hear someone say it, the same goes for those fanatical loonies who say that homosexual love is something EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL, yeah right, the gay boogeyman is battling it out against Gods will.

Republicans, hmmmmm, at least their notions are funny, but it is more of a greek comedy, the tragical kind.
Ideals do not need to be defended to survive, they need to be acted upon.

Actually, politics seems to be coming alive again, at least in the US. The Democrats are in the House and the Senate, and Rumsfeld is in retirement. It will be interesting to see some kind of positive agenda come out of the Dems, instead of so much carping. But what really got me was Nancy Pelosi's victory speech. She promised that we are going to have the most open, most ethical Congress in history. Nonsense - the last time I heard a promise like that out of the mouth of a Democrat it was from Bill Clinton. And we know how open and ethical he was.

I wish she could have said, "Openness - hah! We're too open, which just lets lobbyists monitor our committee meetings while everyone else is too busy to pay attention. And that just lets a minority - lobbyists - dictate effectively to the majority, namely to you, the voting public. No, we are going to be less open - we are going to exclude lobbyists from all our committee meetings and hearings."

"And as for ethics and honesty, dream on. This country is so badly gerrymandered that you sent almost all of us back to the same offices. With the exception of eight Republicans who got caught with their pants down, we are pretty much the same people as the Congress before us. So don't hope for much better than what you have already seen. What you should demand is Congressional action to eliminate, or at least to reduce the deliberate manipulation of Congressional district boundaries so as to rig elections in favor of incumbent political parties."

That would have really livened things up.
Because there is more to Religion than pleasing your Imaginary Friend.
