Subject: From Science to God
I'm reading a lot from a guy called Peter Russell. He has an absolutely brilliant book called From Science to God. (Print it out first if you are like me and don't like reading a lot of stuff online). There is also a condensed version here, but the full text is more thorough and involving. I can't recommend it enough.
It is an extremely lucid account of what he considers will be a paradigm shift from the scientific community (and society at large) concerning consciousness which he considers more integral to reality than space, time or matter. He trained initially as a physicist and his linking of the properties of physical light (including quantum mechanics and special relativity) to the inner light of consciousness spoken of by mystics is absolutely brilliant.
I find Peters writing has almost magical properties of enlightenment for me. I realised another meaning of 'enlightenment' the other day. It means your load is en-lightened -- you feel lighter. The incredible lightness of being! Its amazing how light seems to be at the centre of the physical sciences and at the centre of the inner wisdom spoken of by so many mystics.
Einstein showed through special relativity that a light particle (which moves at the speed of light - obviously) experiences NO time and NO space. From its viewpoint it travels no distance in no time and yet is everywhere. Is God light? Is light God? Is light consciousness? Is God consciousness? Are they the same thing - an underlying reality that we cant know directly yet is the basis for everything we know around us? No wonder Einstein was obessed with the nature of light.
I found it to be an extremely profound book that has me rethinking my views on reality, spirituality and even the concept of God (gulp!). I'd be interested to hear what anyone thinks of it cos I think it marries many of the ideas of eastern philosophies with western understanding of reality.
Cheers,
Phil
