I think it means recognising that if we had been given the job of maintaining authoritarian control over the warring parties within Iraq, we would have either committed much the same kinds of atrocities as Hussein or we would have failed in the job. The crimes were crimes inherent in the job he was asked to do, not in the man himself.

Aren’t those who asked him to do that job equally responsible for his sins? This includes those within Iraq who supported him, and also political and business leaders in other countries such as the United States, Britain and Australia, who helped or supported him in one way or another. In fact we could say they bear an even greater responsibility. At least Hussein had the guts to commit the atrocities himself, rather than employ a deniable intermediary.

And yet those who asked Hussein to do this job will not hang with him.

Has Hussein not become a scapegoat for the sins of us all. The sin being our fear of freedom, i.e. anarchy, i.e. the surrender of authority over others.

Now that Hussein has no power he will no longer need to commit atrocities. But those who are afraid of freedom may support another intermediary like him.

The government of the United States repeatedly claims that they are the world’s champions of Freedom, and yet increasingly they enact laws to try to monitor and control the behaviour of their citizens.

Even if we cannot find it in our hearts to do the Christian thing and forgive Saddam Hussein, let us at least vow to be less like him and catch ourselves when we start to try to tell others what to do.

I can imagine an 'end of history' like Dr. Fukyama, but I cannot imagine and end of politics. History is neutral and therefore subject to end, but politics is evil and therefore eternal.

Perhaps it is merely that politics has become uninspired. Condemning fundamentalism is passe and bickering about the war is obvious. Perhaps it is time for the news media to create a new topic of conversation, but it is nearly high summer and I fear that we are doomed to tedium through early September.

In the interest of provoking comment I will suggest a list of the good, the bad, and the ugly. You are welcome to take issue with this list.

War--but only when fought at the right time and for the right reason


Bad

Love--whenever it threatens preconceived notions, like violating the alleged sanctity of marriage. (What is the sanctity of marriage anyway and does a substantial minority even experience it?)

Wrong. It raises the points that Ahmadinejad and the mullahs ruling Iran consider to be crucial, points which must be discussed before we can talk about weapons. Points which must be discussed because failing to discuss them shows unawareness of and disrespect for Islam, in their worldview.

I think Bush should convene a team of scholars of Islamic history, theology and philosophy, and have them draft a reply to the letter, point by point, indicating where we both agree and disagree with Ahmadinejad, and where we think his interpretations of Islam are blasphemous and wrong. Where we think his actions are evil, according to our best understanding of Islamic tradition.

The radical Islamists have long been using the Qur'an as their greatest weapon, more powerful than atomic bombs. The second act of war was Khomeini's fatwa of February 4, 1989, proclaiming death for Salman Rushdie for his fantasy-novel The Satanic Verses. This order, given by a head of state to murder Rushdie, a law-abiding citizen of Great Britain, who was merely exercising his right of free speech, was an act of war against the United Kingdom. Indeed, in that it was intended to cow the rest of the world into submitting to Iran's standards of what one may and may not say about Islamic concepts and persons, it was an act of war against the world in general and the West in particular.

So Iran has been at war with the US and the world for 26 and 17 years, respectively. Iran's enrichment of uranium to "reactor-grade," is just another step in an old and escalating conflict. No doubt a future step will be Iran's enriching "laboratory quantities" of "weapons-grade" uranium, whether they announce it publicly or not. And then, someday, Iran will have a clandestine stockpile of nuclear weapons, one of which it may test, as a point of honor.

Because this conflict is about honor, which in honor-shame societies is intimately bound up with power. And in Islamist Fundamentalist thinking, honor-shame is raised to the level of religion. It is made out to be identical with the practice of Islam itself.

He talked about what the US could learn from Israel in regard to living with repeated attacks using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Some are vehicle-borne (VBIEDs) like that used by Tim McVeigh to bomb the Murrah building. Some are deposited where they can do the most cruel damage, like the bomb hidden in the bottom tray of a birdcage so that it can blow shrapnel through the child that picks it up, as well as everyone nearby. Or like the bomb hidden in a hollowed out melon to kill her mother and her fellow shoppers getting groceries for the evening meal. And then there is the human-guided IED, popularly mis-named the suicide bomber.

These folks are not merely mis-guided. These folks are evil.

In particular, they pervert the Word of God to make it justify their actions. Why? Because they are from an honor/shame culture in which the lowest thing a man can be is powerless, and the only way for a man to redeem himself is through acts of power. Since the ultimate power is that of life-and-death, killing is what they do. They believe this brings honor to God, and honor to Islam. And that bringing this honor guarantees them a place in heaven.

So, despite the list of grievances that Michael Scheuer claims the Islamofacists (or Jihaddicts) use to recruit new members, their goal is not the redress of these grievances. All honor is due to Allah, and they will not stop until everyone worships Him in the proper manner, or acknowledges the dominion of those who do. They are not trying to get the West to leave them alone. They are not trying to stop Globalization. They are trying to dictate its terms.

And they are bringing their war here. As if 9/11, the Madrid bombings, and the London Underground bombings were not enough. Rabbi Zuckerman showed videos of no less than six Imams preaching violent jihad against all non-Muslims. One of them even reminded his male listeners to attend firearms shooting practice after the prayer-service. And they were all preaching in mosques in American cities.
